The Latvian bass-baritone Rihards Macanovskis will play the main role in Wagner's The Flying Dutchman on the stage of the Varna State Opera on Wednesday, the opera reported.

Macanovskis has been a soloist at the Latvian National Opera since 2003. His achievements have been recognized with the Latvijas Gaze Annual Award for Opera in 2012 and 2014 as Best Opera Soloist. In 2013, he received the Pauls Sakss Music Award and was nominated for the Grand Music Award for his outstanding performance in Tchaikovsky’s romances alongside the pianist Martins Zilberts.

The other roles in Wednesday’s performance will be played by Linka Stoyanova as the Dutchman's beloved Senta, Valery Georgiev as her fiancé, Lyudmil Petrov as the sailor Daland, Artyom Arutyunov as the Helmsman, and Silvia Angelova as Senta's nurse.

The Flying Dutchman premiered on the Varna stage at the end of November 2023. Wagner's romantic opera is staged by the permanent guest director of the Varna State Opera, Vera Nemirova. At the helm is the permanent guest conductor of the Varna Opera, Svetoslav Borisov, as well as Nadezhda McCune as choir conductor.

The performance was shown at the Festival of Opera and Ballet Art at the end of 2023, recalls the Theater and Music Production Centre in Varna.
