Stelea Spatarul Street in Bucharest caused a sensation on the eve of the International Day of Postmen and Couriers, February 16. It captured people's attention with its unusual mailboxes, all of them customized with a painting. The project was conceived by Luciana Gheorghe, a visual artist and owner of a handmade jewelry shop.
"I came up with the idea for unique mailboxes the moment I decided to buy one for myself. I wanted something uplifting, something to depict my family's mood. I bought a mailbox online and customized it to my taste," she told BTA.
Gheorghe painted and installed the first mailbox on Stelea Spatarul Street in 2016. She recalled that people were thrilled with the idea from the very beginning and quickly embraced it.
Behind the painting on each of the over 15 boxes, there is a personal story related to the owner's pet, their hobby, or a fun story.
"We all know that people bond over shared passions. This project, called 'The Happy Mailbox Street', has a strong social impact. It's like a calling card, if you will. Imagine if an animal lover walked down this street and saw a mailbox customized with the pet of the respective tenants. They would be able to form a first impression of them immediately," the Romanian said.
"I wanted to create a sort of permanent outdoor exhibition, and have the passers-by smiling when they see the paintings," Gheorghe said. And she has succeeded in doing so.
The painted mailboxes bring joy not only to the residents and visitors to Bucharest but also to the postmen when they deliver letters on Stelea Spatarul Street.
