Strong northwesterly winds over the last two days have created conditions for increased avalanche danger at higher elevations in Bulgarian mountains, the Mountain Rescue Service (MRS) says in a Facebook post.

Mountain hikers are advised to follow only winter-time above-ground pathway markings and avoid eastern slopes. Lateral concentrations of wind-blown snow are possible on northern slopes. An expected rise in temperatures can create complicated conditions on slopes with other orientation as well.

In the event of an avalanche, you should call the MRS on 112 to give information about where the incident occurred and how many people are affected, and only then should you try to recover those buried under the snow.

If you witness an avalanche close to a popular tourist site and no one is affected, please call the MRS nonetheless. This can prevent a possible needless search for people, the MRS says.
