A total of 17,765 offences were registered in the Sofia Directorate of the Interior in 2023, down from 18,044 in 2022. There is also a decrease in the number of registered crimes in the area of the Regional Directorate of the Interior Ministry in Sofia: 2477, down from 2,587 in 2022, according to state of crime data from the period January 1 – December 31, 2023, aggregated by BTA.

The data show that the detection rate for crimes reported in 2023 has increased. A total of 5,657 crimes were detected in Sofia, which is a 31.84% detection rate, while in 2022 the rate was 28.12%. The crimes detected in Sofia Region in 2023 accounted for more than half of the offences registered throughout the year. Their number stood at 1,357, which is a 54.78% detection rate. For reference, the detection rate in 2022 was 45.88%. The offenders were mainly men. In 2023, 1,250 crimes registered in previous periods were solved in Sofia, while 273 crimes were solved in the Sofia Regional Directorate of the Interior.

Twelve intentional homicides took place in the nine precinct police departments in Sofia in 2023, and 11 of them were solved. Six murders occurred in Sofia Region and were solved. Thirteen offences against citizens' political rights were registered in the Sofia police departments, one of which was solved. Figures show that 21 corruption crimes were registered, and most of them were solved. According to the data, 388 crimes committed in the context of domestic violence were registered in the precinct police departments in the capital in 2023, while in 2022 their number was 252. The number of cases of drunk and drugged driving was 956, up by 11 compared to 2022.
