site.btaEmployers' Association Prioritizes Full Schengen Entry in 2024, Eurozone in 2025, OECD in 2026
During a press conference at the BTA National Press Club on Wednesday, Kiril Domuschiev, Managing Board Chair of the Confederation of Employers and Industrialists in Bulgaria and Association of the Organizations of Bulgarian Employers (AOBE) Rotating Chair for 2024, said that the AOBE national priorities for this year are Bulgaria to become a full-fledged Schengen member in 2024 and to join the euro area in 2025 and the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) in 2026.
He noted that what has been achieved so far in terms of this country’s accession to the Schengen area is a successful first step, which the business welcomes. "The success of Bulgaria's admission for air and sea travel should be followed by its accession for land borders, because Bulgaria is losing billions. The Bulgarian business and state are losing them, we are all losing them," Domuschiev said. He pointed out that the employers will insist appropriate measures and steps to be taken so that Bulgaria becomes a full-fledged member of the Schengen area as soon as possible.
As to the euro area, Domuschiev stressed the fact that Bulgaria has a regular government and argued that this gives rise to hopes that this strategic goal for business is attainable and should be achieved in 2025. He added that this depends on the policies pursued, including fiscal policy, a flexible and more developed labour market, the economy’s transition to higher value-added industries, digitalization, etc. Domuschiev believes that there are factors that can accelerate these processes, namely the rise in credit ratings, sending positive messages to the outside world, the potential opportunity to attract investors, and greater security.
He said that the employers' organizations will continue to urge the Government and State institutions to work hard to make Bulgaria's membership in the OECD a reality in 2026. Domuschiev noted that Bulgaria’s accession to the Organization will enable this country to carry out important reforms that will contribute to its modernization, the creation of a better business climate, economic growth acceleration, and job creation.
