site.btaCandidate for Mayor of Dupnitsa Arrested after Appearing on International Wanted List

A mayoral candidate in Dupnitsa, Metodi Zaharinov has been detained under an international arrest warrant. The information was confirmed for BTA by the spokesperson of the District Prosecutor's Office in Kyustendil, Mariyana Sirakova. 

The arrest follows a decision of the Central Election Commission (CEC) adopted on Wednesday.

Under the Election Code, registered candidates cannot be detained prior to the announcement of the election results without the CEC's permission. 

The arrest is in connection with a notification by the Regional Directorate of Interior in Kyustendil that Greece has put Zaharinov in the wanted list of the Schengen Information System.
