The 20th edition of the International Festival of Antique Drama Stobi in Veles (Central North Macedonia) opened Monday with Ivan Radev Drama Theatre – Pleven’s performance of Antigone.

Alexander Morfov's production, built around Jean Anouilh's version of Sophocles' tragedy, attracted the audience for two hours in the hall of the Yordan Hadjikonstantinov-Ginot Theater in Veles as soon as they entered the hall, where they were greeted by the guitars of Alexander Kolev and Borislav Kovachev, and the acting of Deyan Donkov, Milena Ermenkova, Nadya Keranova, Alexander Kanev and the rest of the cast, the choreography of Andrea Gavriliu. The impressive technical and scenographic decisions that make the performance impressive were rewarded with long applause from the audience.

Within the festival, which this year will be held under the motto "New Manifestos", the official and accompanying program will include nine performances by theaters from Serbia, Turkiye, Bulgaria, Kazakhstan, Greece and theater productions of the hosts from North Macedonia.

Three photo and multimedia exhibitions, four workshops, a panel discussion and a round table for each play in the official selection will be organized during the event.

Traditionally, the jury of the International Festival of Antique Drama Stobi will award four prizes - for best female role, best male role, best direction and the Grand Prix, which last year was awarded to Plovdiv Theater’s performance Ulysses.

The Bulgarian Cultural Information Centre in Skopje is a partner of the festival in Veles, which is supported by North Macedonia’s Culture Ministry and will last until October 20.
