A team of 50 Bulgarian firefighters and 15 vehicles are on their way to the Greek island of Corfu (Kerkyra) to help in the efforts to extinguish the wildfires, Valentin Krastev of the Chief Directorate for Fire Safety and Population Protection told BTA.
Twenty firefighters and four vehicles remained in Thessaloniki, he specified.
They departed from Thessaloniki at 4 am on Wednesday morning and boarded a ship to Corfu at Igoumenitsa.
The authorities on the island have been up for 3-4 nights as fresh fires erupt on its territory, North Corfu Deputy Mayor Nikos Mouzakitis said. Until now the damages have been mainly to backyards with the exception of one house.
Greece is fighting other large fires in Rhodes and Northern Peloponnese.
