site.btaMemorial Plaque Honours Bulgarian Revolutionaries in Moldova's Capriana Monastery

A memorial plaque was solemnly unveiled in Moldova’s Capriana Monastery on Monday. The plaque is in honour of Bulgarian national liberation movement members Georgi Rakovski and Hristo Botev, who resided at the monastery in the 1860s and 1870s. 

The plaque was placed at the initiative of Prof Nikolay Chervenkov, honorary chairman of the Scientific Association of Bulgarians in Moldova. 

Attending the solemn ceremony were representatives of the supreme Moldovan clergy, the Bulgarian Embassy in Chisinau, and the Bulgaria community in Moldova.

After consecrating the memorial plaque, Metropolitan of Chisinau and All Moldova Vladimir gave a speech, in which he said that in the most complex moments in Bulgarian history, the Capriana Monastery gave refuge to many freedom fighters of Bulgaria, the Scientific Association of Bulgarians in Moldova reported.

Bulgarian Ambassador Evgeni Stoychev called on everyone to preserve deep in their hearts the everlasting work of Botev and Rakovski. 

Taraclia District Council Deputy Chairman Alexander Borimechkov said that for the Bulgarian community in Moldova, this is “yet another reason to be proud of our national identity, which once against underscores the connection with our common history in the fight against Ottoman rule.” 

For his contributions to the Eastern Orthodox Church, Chervenkov was presented with the church order of St Gabriel Banulescu-Bodoni by Metropolitan Vladimir. The Taraclia District Council presented him with an Ivan Inzov honorary medal.
