The Prosecutor's Office has charged a Turkish citizen with carrying undeclared currency in the amount of EUR 150,000 (equivalent to BGN 293,374) through the Kapitan Andreevo border checkpoint, the press centre of the prosecution service said.

On May 28, a truck with Turkish registration, driven by V.A. (27), tried to leave Bulgaria in the direction of Turkiye. During an inspection of the vehicle's trailer from the outside, in a refrigeration unit, customs officers found the undeclared currency.

In this case, since the beginning of the year, the amount of illegally smuggled currency found at the crossing point with Turkiye is now close to BGN 16.5 million. In the whole of 2022, the total value of the illegally carried currency detected at Kapitan Andreevo was about BGN 27 million, according to the customs statistics. The most frequently trafficked currencies are euros and British pounds. The Criminal Code provides for up to five years in prison or a fine of one fifth of the subject of the offence if proven.
