In 2022, the Supreme Court of Cassation (SCC) heard 13 773 cases - the largest number of cases in the last five years, according to the SCC report released on Friday. The workload of judges is "extremely high" and affected the speed of justice, the report says.

The workload started getting excessive in 2021, which is evident from the data on the backlog of cases as of January 1, 2022. The number of these cases, 4,983, is the highest in the last five years.

The 8,790 cases filed in 2022 represent a decrease of 309 cases compared to the 9,099 cases filed in 2021. 

The total number of cases to be heard increased by 564 compared to 2021. 

The SCC judges pronounced on a total of 8,678 cases in 2022, which was 465 more completed than in 2021. The cases that remained pending as of December 31, 2022 were 5,038.
