The deputy head of the National Investigation Service (NIS), Yassen Todorov, dismissed the arguments of his chief, NIS head Borislav Sarafov, that he should be removed from office for breaking the rules and violating the communication strategy of the prosecution service in statements in the wake of a May 1 blast near the motorcade of Prosecutor General Ivan Geshev.

Todorov said that all his media appearances were coordinated with the press office of the prosecution service.

The move for Todorov's repalcement was something of a side effect of a rift between Prosecutor General Ivan Geshev and Borislav Sarafov. Sarafov suggested that Todorov had acted under Geshev's instructions in violation of the rules. In the meantime Geshev came under fire and there appeared general agreement that he should be removed. Returning from a long official trip abroad, Geshev spoke for the first time Monday, refusing to do so.

Asked by the press whether Sarafov's actions were an attempt at a coup in the prosecution service, Todorov said: "It seems so."

He also said that the prosecution service should bar all attempts for influence by politicians.
