Following a spate of bomb hoaxes in schools across the country in recent days, Interior Minister Ivan Demerdzhiev told the media on Thursday: "We have not found any real threat so far, people can vote without fear." He was referring to the April 2 parliamentary elections when voting will take place mostly in school buildings.
On March 28, Demerdzhiev said that the leading theory about the threats was that they are part of hybrid attacks linked to Russia. He stressed then that the threats are also happening in other European countries with the same sources of attack.
Commenting on the issue on Thursday, Demerdzhiev pointed out that there are people detained in various Bulgarian cities who are clearly not part of the channels from which the hybrid threats come. "They seek popularity, unfortunately they find it and provoke other people to get involved," he explained.
"Tomorrow we will adopt a procedure under which the Interior Ministry and the services will assess the real danger, so that no schools will be closed and no classes suspended," Demerdzhiev added.
