June 28, (BTA) - The state-owned
Maritsa East 2 thermal power plant has been allocated an annual
quota of 1 million MWh of electricity on the regulated market
between July 1 2021 and June 30 2022. Energy Minister Andrey
Zhekov on Monday signed an order setting this quantity for
mandatory purchase from the public supplier for the regulated
market, his Ministry said.

The Energy Ministry has received opinions from the executive
directors of the National Electricity Company and the
Electricity System Operator in connection with the need for
ensuring the reliable operation, security and sustainability of
the country's electricity system which requires maintaining
Maritsa East 2 functional.

The setting of an annual quota for the thermal power facility is
in response to that need. This is a short-term measure which
will ensure the operation of the thermal power plant in the next
year and a smooth transition with a view to the environmental
requirements and economic realities in relation to C02 intensive
 producers, the Ministry says.

The transition to more environmental friendly industries in the
Maritsa East Complex will take place gradually and without
social stress through the use of various instruments provided by
the European Commission: the National Recovery and Resilience
Plan, the Just Transition Fund and etc. Parallel to that the
Energy Ministry has proposed for inclusion in the National
Recovery and Resilience Plan projects for supplying with gas the
industries in the region and projects for new RES capabilities.
This will provide a horizon for development of the region in
line with the challenges of the EU Green Deal and will have a
positive impact on the entire Bulgarian Energy Holding. RY/PP
