The Kyustendil District Court gave suspended prison sentences of 3 months each, to an Iraqi and a Syrian national for a border trespassing attempt. The implementation of the penal sanctions is subject to a three-year probationary period. The two were also ordered to pay a BGN 100 fine each, the court said on Friday.

Awad A., 36, from Iraq, and Sbia R., 44, from Syria pleaded guilty of trying to cross illegally from Bulgaria into Serbia on Thursday, in Treklyano Municipality. The District Court's sentence is final and unappealable.

The Court imposed the same penal sanction on Mahdi S., 28, from Afghanistan, who pleaded guilty of entering Bulgaria from Serbia in the area of the Oltomanzi Checkpoint without proper authorization on October 1.

Since the beginning of 2022, more than 120 persons have attempted to cross the border illegally in the region. In most cases, the illegals have tried to enter Serbia, the court told BTA.
