Sofia Mayor Participates in Meeting of Mayors of Europe's Capital Cities
Sofia, October 2 (BTA) - Sofia Mayor Yordanka Fandakova attended
the meeting of Mayors of Europe's capital cities, the press
centre of the Sofia Municipality said. The meeting took place in
Rome with the participation of EU Commissioner for Regional
Development Johannes Hahn.
The needs of the capitals in the context of the EU programme for
Sustainable Urban Demonstration Projects (SUDeP) and proposals
on future joint actions featured on the agenda of the talks.
Participating were mayors and deputy mayors of all capitals of
EU member states, including the mayors of Rome, Paris, Vienna,
Bucharest, Athens and Zagreb.
A conference with the participation of representatives of
European and Italian institutions, experts and media was held
after the meeting. Fandakova presented the mayors' opinion on
the role of the capital cities in the EU development and the
drafting of a common European plan on development in the new
programming period.
Along with the specific problems, which the different cities
have, all they face common challenges, such as climate change,
environment protection, greenhouse gas emissions, social
exclusions, unemployment and poverty, said Fandakova. With a
view to overcoming them, the capitals should work to draft a
common plan with clear priorities, such as environment
protection, energy efficiency, mobility, social inclusion,
innovations and education.
