Rare White Truffle
Found in Smolyan
Region

Smolyan, Southern Bulgaria, November 17 (BTA) - A white truffle
weighing 0.672 kg was found in the upper reaches of the Arda
River in the southern Smolyan region.
The Rhodopi area is known to produce black truffles but a white
truffle is a real rarity.

White truffles are the most valuable on the market and their
price is known to fetch tens of thousands of euro per kilo.

Denislav Ilchev of the village of Smilyan says he found the
truffle by chance. Truffle traders have confirmed the find to be
a white truffle but to be sure that this is the variety which
is of commercial interest, Ilchev needs to make laboratory
tests.

The crop of black truffles was plentiful this year, says
mushroom trader Slavcho Madanski.

Traders currently pay some 90 euro per kilo of prime quality of
autumn black truffles. The purchase price plumetted to 35-40 euro
due to hefty supply during the summer months when one truffle
purchase shop alone bought 2 tonnes in three weeks.

The truffles are mostly exported to Italy, France, Germany,
Spain, the Netherlands and Belgium.

Denislav Ilchev has kept a secret the place where he found the
white truffle. He says that truffle hunting has become and
obsession for many people, not unlike treasure hunting, and
nature is being overexploited. PK/LN/
