Separate Waste Collection System
Provides 16% of
Recycled Materials
Sofia, November 18 (BTA) - The system of separate waste
collection from households and companies provides 16 per cent of
the recycled materials, 25 per cent come from producers and 59
per cent - from subcontractors, representatives of the Ecopack
Packaging Waste Recovery Organization told a BTA-hosted news
conference Tuesday. Ecopack has a 43 per cent market share in
Bulgaria.
Recovery organizations unite all producers and importers of
packaged goods in Bulgaria. By law, they are obliged to recover
and recycle their packaging, one of the ways being to be members
of a recovery organization which engages in this activity in
return for a membership fee.
The outcome of Ecopack's work over 10 years is 650 tonnes of
recycled waste packaging, the organization's CEO Todor
Bourgoudzhiev said. This means that 4,600,000 trees were saved
from logging and some 3 million cu m of water, 643,000 MW
electricity and 1,400,000 barrels of oil were also saved. The
work of the recovery organization has contributed to reducing
landfill volume by 2,300,000 cu m.
The company reported that it has invested 16 million leva to
develop the system in the period of ten years and underscored
its educational system focused on separate waste collection and
intended mainly for children and teenagers./PK/BR
