Number of Bulgarian Students
in USA Down by 15%
Compared to 2013

Silistra, on the Danube, November 19 (BTA) - The number of
Bulgarian students in the USA has dropped by 15 per cent
compared to 2013, said Snezhana Teneva, consultant on US
education. She presented the programme for education in the
United States of the Fulbright Bulgarian-American Commission for
Educational Exchange in Silistra on Wednesday.

According to Teneva, there has been a downward trend in the
number of Bulgarians studying in the US since 2007, because
Bulgaria's entry in the EU provided young people with wider
access to higher education institutions in European countries.
Another reason for this trend are the economic and financial
problems of Bulgarian families, she added.

A total of 1,252 Bulgarians are currently studying in American
higher education institutions. In 2013, seventeen Bulgarian
students received grants amounting to nearly 2,200,000 dollars
for four years of undergraduate studies.

Thus far, over 460 pupils from 31 schools in 27 Bulgarian cities
have joined Fulbright's programme for education in the United
States. It is aimed at preparing pupils from 8th to 12th grade
for successful application to elite American colleges and
universities with grants. The programme is free and open to all
pupils.
