It Is Important for Bulgaria to Address Seriously Strategy on European Energy Union - Foreign Minister
Brussels, December 3 (BTA Correspondent Nikolay Zheliyazkov) -
"It is very important for Bulgaria to address seriously the
strategy on the establishment of an European Energy Union and we
should focus our efforts in this direction," Bulgarian Foreign
Minister Daniel Mitov, said in Brussels, where he attends a NATO
meeting. "The gas inter-connectors with Greece would diversify
our sources," he added.
There is no drama with the South Stream project. Bulgaria has
clearly said that it wishes to have the project implemented up
to European rules and the Bulgarian legislation, so as to be
economically beneficial. If the project is terminated, this will
be done unilaterally by Russia, Mitov commented.
The Foreign Minister confirmed that he has learnt about the
development of the issue (Russian President Vladimir Putin's
announcement about the dropping of the project) from the media.
Standard diplomatic channels have not been used, he explained.
"If there are good intentions, diplomatic channels would be
used. The other day, I had a meeting with a Russian Deputy
Foreign Minister but this issue was not discussed or mentioned
at all. Bulgaria cannot be blamed at all in this case because
that gas pipeline is not designed only for us. We cannot be
accused, as we are a part of a Community with rules, which we
have to follow," Bulgaria's top diplomat stated.
Anyway, Bulgaria will use diplomatic channels to clarify the
situation, said he. Bulgaria is a sovereign state, which
protects its interests and works in accordance with the
established rules, he added.
