Radan Kanev Urges
Prompt Start
of Reforms

Veliko Turnovo, North Central Bulgaria, January 14 (BTA) -
Democrats for Strong Bulgaria party leader Radan Kanev said on
January 13 that the reforms which start at the beginning of a
government's tenure are the kind that stand a chance of
progressing. Speaking at a BTA-hosted news conference in Veliko
Turnovo, Kanev said the desired changes in the sectors of
justice and internal security are essential for the overall
reform process.

The administrative reform should get underway promptly, too,
said Kanev, whose party is a member of the Reformist Bloc, one
of the entities represented in Parliament. He expects that
Deputy Prime Minister Roumyana Buchvarova will make sure that
the administrative reform starts early this year, because civil
servants should "work in good faith, professionally, and for the
people, not for the parties."

Ivan Ivanov MP of the Reformist Bloc said a debate on the
education reform has begun and discussions are going on about a
bill on pre-school and school education, which is due to be
considered on first reading in Parliament.

According to Kanev, important prerequisites are in place to get
the reforms going. One of them is the unanimity of the member
parties of the Reformist Bloc about all matters. Another
prerequisite is that the Movement for Rights and Freedoms (MRF)
has been safely ousted from the legislative and executive
branches of government. Kanev believes that MRF, more than any
other party, stands for the status quo and is associated with
the failings in the field of justice, security and public
administration, which is why it should be kept from power for a
long time. LI/VE
