"The Lesson" Earns
Yet Another International
Film Award
Sofia, February 3 (BTA) - "The Lesson," a new Bulgarian feature
film which has already become very successful internationally,
has won yet another prestigious award. At the Goteborg Film
Festival in Sweden, "The Lesson," made by first-time directors
Kristina Grozeva and Petar Valchanov, earned the Ingmar Bergman
International Debut Award, the production crew said on February
2.
The film is a drama about a teacher in a small town who faces
moral challenges. The jury in Goteborg said that it elaborately
depicts the psychology and emotions of the main character who
finds herself in difficult situations that possibly anyone could
face. As an achievement of the film, the jury singled out the
fact that it "eagerly seeks for, shares, and presents what is
true to us as audience." With "the rhythm created in the process
of editing, the way it incorporates natural light, and the
outstanding performance" of the actors, "The Lesson" has
achieved a quality that makes it hard to believe that this is a
first-time feature film, the jury said.
"The Lesson" had its world premiere at the San Sebastian Film
Festival in Spain, where it earned the New Directors Award.
Subsequent distinctions at festivals in Tokyo (Japan),
Thessaloniki (Greece), Warsaw (Poland), Angers (France), Cuenca
(Ecuador), Kiev (Ukraine) and Varna (Bulgaria) made the film one
of the most successful Bulgarian productions of the last 20
years.
The Bulgarian premiere of "The Lesson" will take place in the
competitive section of the upcoming Sofia International Film
Festival, which will be held between March 5 to 29. After that,
the film will be released in Bulgarian theatres. VI/VE
