GERB Propose Three Month
Suspension of
Unprocessed Timber Export

Sofia, February 12 (BTA) - GERB submitted a draft decision for a
three month suspension of unprocessed timber export, GERB MPs
Tsveta Karayancheva and Tsvetomir Mihov said in Parliament
Thursday.

The relevant legislative changes will be made during those three
months, which will lead to a reduction of illegal logging,
Karayancheva explained. According to her, that time must be used
to come up with rules for stimulating the true Bulgarian
producers, backed by production facilities and not middlemen.

The banning of export should lead to a reduced tree felling,
Mihov commented. He expects the temporary export ban to reduce
the price of timber on the domestic market.

Mihov said that one of the reasons for the floods is the
uncontrolled deforestation. To a certain extent this step
prevents logging, which in turn leads to such disasters, he
explained.

Reforestation before timber harvesting can be included in the
law, which means that trees will be planted prior to being
harvested and not afterwards, which is currently the case. PK/MY
