PM Borissov, Other Politicians Questioned as Witnesses in Lawsuit against Former Head of National Intelligence Service

Sofia, March 31 (BTA) - Prime Minister Boyko Borissov testified
as a witness in the lawsuit against the former head of the
National Intelligence Service, Kircho Kirov, who is tried for
embezzling 5 million leva. Borissov gave evidence for Kirov's
work during the period when the defendant headed the
intelligence service. During his five years at the post Kirov is
believed to have diverted 900,000 leva a year. Upon conviction,
he faces a prison
sentence of 10 to 20 years and full or partial confiscation.

Former PM Sergei Stanishev too has testified in the case, as has
ex-President Georgi Purvanov.

Speaking to reporters Kirov said that he found it normal for
statesmen to express opinions about the work of the National
Intelligence Service and his work as head of the entity. Kirov
claimed that the lawsuit against him is political in its core,
and the charges, absurd. He said that the money for which he was
charged was not embezzled but used for special operations.
Kirov said that he has heard many times statesmen expressing
satisfaction with his work and now expects to hear the same in
different circumstances, as a defendant.
