Border Village Fire Contained
Lessovo, Southeastern Bulgaria, August 5 (BTA) - A wildfire
which had been raging near the border village of Lessovo for two
days was contained on Wednesday and was prevented from
spreading into Turkey, Tatyana Pavlova, Spokesperson for the
Interior Ministry Directorate in Yambol, said.
On Wednesday morning, over 80 firefighters were involved in the
effort to put out the blaze which affected 700 hectares of land
covered with dry grass and bushes. Experts will survey the area
to make sure the fire has been completely extinguished.
Firefighters from all over Yambol Region, forestry workers and
35 military had been working to suppress the fire since Monday.
A military helicopter was sent there. The task was hampered by
treacherous wind, high temperatures and rough terrain which is
inaccessible to any vehicles.
The authorities have issued read alert for fire danger in Yambol
Region and parts of the neighbouring regions of Haskovo and
Sliven.
