Adoptions of Stray Dogs Increase in Sofia

Sofia, August 10 (BTA) - A total of 325 stray dogs have been adopted in Sofia since the start of 2015, according to the municipal manager of dog shelters, Ekoravnovesie. At a news conference here Monday, Ekoravnovesie acting CEO Peter Kirov said that adoptions totalled 450 for the whole of last year.

In July, Ekoravnovesie caught 302 stray dogs, neutered 235 and returned 125 to the location where they were captured. 51 dogs were adopted.

Another 161 dogs kept in house yards were neutered during a campaign that lasted from March to July.

A deplorable practice persists where people from communities neighbouring on Sofia dump the litter of their dogs or abandon the dogs themselves in Sofia, said Kirov. He was adamant that for this reason the problem with the large population of stray dogs in Bulgaria can be addressed only with the adoption in a national programme that will introduce measures on a national scale. Ekoravnovesie alone cannot stop people from abandoning their dogs in the street, Kirov added.
