Deputy PM Kalfin: Bulgaria Will Insist on Specific Commitments in EU for Handling Migrant Crisis

Silistra, on the Danube, September 13 (BTA) - Bulgaria will insist on a clear approach and the making of specific commitments within the EU for the handling of the migrant crisis, Deputy Prime Minister and Labour and Social Policy Minister Ivailo Kalfin told a news conference here Saturday.

According to him, the relocation scheme for asylum-seekers proposed by the European Commission is not particularly clear. "We cannot possibly keep by force a certain number of refugees in our country as the distribution principle requires, if they do not wish to remain here," Kalfin said. According to him, significant changes are needed in the efforts to stop the refugee trafficking and assist in their accommodation in countries neighbouring the conflicts.

In his words, it is important to make clear the list of countries whose nationals enter Europe as refugees because the huge flow of people includes persons who are not running from the terrorist attacks and bombings but want to emigrate. It should also be considered how to financially support the refugees accommodated in various European countries, he added.

According to Kalfin, there aren't enough effective actions to solve the problem on the part of both the EU and the Trans-Atlantic partners - the US and Canada. In his words, the agreement of all countries that are ready to cooperate, including Russia, should be sought for joint actions to stop the conflicts in the Middle East.
