Days of Japanese Culture in Bulgaria Open with Theatre Noh Plays
Sofia, October 2 (BTA) - The Days of Japanese Culture in
Bulgaria will be launched with two Noh theatre performances:
"Momijigari" (Autumn Foliage Viewing) and "Tsuchigumo" (Ground
Spider). The first is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. on October 2 and
will be hosted by the Sofia Opera and Ballet House. The second
will be presented in Kazanluk (Central Bulgaria), at the Arsenal
Culture House on October 5. Admission is free of charge, the
Japanese Embassy in Sofia said.
"Momijigari" is a tale of the fight between the warrior Taira no
Koremochi and the demon of Mount Togakushi, transformed as a
noble woman. "Tsuchigumo" relates the tale of the curse on the
warrior Minamoto no Raiko and his struggle with the demon
Tsuchigumo. The performances will be presented by the Yamamoto
Noh Gakudo theatre.
Noh is a major form of classical Japanese musical drama that has
been performed since the 14th century. Developed by Kan'ami and
his son Zeami, it is the oldest major theatre art still
regularly performed today. Noh was inscribed in 2008 on the
Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of
Humanity by UNESCO as Nogaku theatre.
For the first time in its history, some of the actors on the
sidelines will be Bulgarians personally trained by the famous
Akihiro Yamamoto of the Kanze school who also heads the
theatre.
