Sofia University Elects New Rector
Sofia, November 17 (BTA) - Professor Atanas Gerdjikov was elected to become the new rector of the St. Kliment Ohridski University in Sofia Tuesday. He was supported by 190 votes in the University's General Meeting to become the 56th rector of the oldest, biggest and strongest establishment of higher education in Bulgaria.
He will have the job for the next four years.
The other candidate, chemistry professor Toni Spassov, won 162 votes.
Prof. Gerdjikov was born in 1963. He is a professor of Roman literature with a doctorate in Antique and medieval literature. He graduated from Berlin's Humboldt-Universitat and later specialized in Austria and Germany. He has served as Deputy Minister of Education (2001-2003), Head of the Scientific Research Fund (2008-2009) and Sofia University Deputy Rector (since 2010).
He is the author of the first Bulgarian translation of Aristotle's "Politics".
The General Meeting also elected a control and academic council, as well as a University Ombudsman.
