Small Distillery Owners Block Danube Bridge Border Checkpoint in Protest over Restrictive Legislation

Rousse, on the Danube, April 19 (BTA) - Owners of rakiya brandy distillation facilities Tuesday blocked the border checkpoint at Danube Bridge near Rousse for an hour in protest over restrictive legislation.

They protested against recent revisions to the Excise Duty Act which prohibit them to operate from January 1 to June 30 or according to their full capacity of 1,000 litres as it was until now.

The protestors demand a return of the previous situation at which they worked year-round, Maria Ivanova of Rousse said.

The protesters explained that this was a spontaneous gathering intended as warning. They say they have been registered according to all Bulgarian laws, that they are not criminals and pay their taxes and that the current law protects large-scale alcoholic beverage producers.
