President Plevneliev Meets Jose-Manuel Barroso

Sofia, June 7 (BTA) - The European idea needs a new wave of support not only by the EU institutions bit also by the governments of the member states and the European citizens, President Rosen Plevneliev and former European Commission president Jose-Manuel Barroso agreed at a meeting here quoted by the President's Press Secretariat. Barroso is on a visit to Sofia.

The two were unanimous that the majority of crises around and within the EU make it necessary for the European countries to pool their efforts together in order to find common solutions.

Plevneliev and Barroso agreed that a possible exit of the United Kingdom from the EU may threaten united Europe and provoke a new crisis.

Plevneliev thanked the guest for his consistent support in the process of Bulgaria's European integration. On his part, Barroso said that Bulgaria has always been one of the most pro-European countries and this principled position should be recognized and supported. He thanked Plevneliev for his important contribution to the development of the European project.

Later in the day, Barroso will deliver a public lecture on: "Digital citizens of Europe and the world" at the St. Kliment Ohridski Sofia University.
