Borissov to Meet
with Turkish President
on August 24

Sofia, July 22 (BTA) - Bulgarian Prime Minister Boyko Borissov said on Friday he has been invited to meet with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on August 24. On August 26, Borissov and Romanian President Klaus Iohannis will visit Germany at the invitation of Chancellor Angela Merkel. The news was unveiled by the Prime Minister in an interview with Nova Television.

Asked whether the events in neighbouring Turkey hold any risks for Bulgaria, Borissov said: "We should be very cautious when talking about that, because we are as close as it gets. It is not only that we share a common border; there are also many Bulgarian expatriates in Turkey and many Bulgarian Muslims in Bulgaria. We need to be careful."

He went on to say: "Some stirring-up is felt on the other side of the border, refugees are on the move there. We catch between 150 and 200 migrants in Bulgaria's interior every day."

"Our border with Greece is not controlled at all, except for a few border crossings where we have beefed up security. So yesterday we decided to send some manpower to places where there is no fence [on the border] and where there are no thermal imaging cameras," Borissov said in the televised interview.

"Sadly, almost nothing of the Turkey-EU agreement is being implemented," he added. /PK/VE
