Sofia, August 15 (BTA) - In the second quarter of 2016, there were 265,600 unemployed persons in Bulgaria and the unemployment rate was 8.0 per cent, the National Statistical Institute reported on Monday, citing the results of its latest Labour Force Survey. Compared to the second quarter of 2015, the number of unemployed persons diminished by 65,300 and the unemployment rate decreased by 1.9 percentage points.

Over the same period, the unemployment rate declined for both sexes, reaching 8.8 per cent for men and 7.2 per cent for women. Of the total number of unemployed persons in the second quarter of 2016, 155,700 (58.6 per cent) were men and 109,900 (41.4 per cent) were women. Among all unemployed persons, 12.9 per cent had higher education, 48.9 per cent had secondary education, and 38.2 per cent had primary education or less.

In the second quarter of 2016, there were 161,100 long-term unemployed persons, representing 60.6 per cent of all unemployed. The long-term unemployment rate was 4.9 per cent, down by 1.3 percentage points from the comparable quarter of 2015. Broken down by sex, the long-term unemployment rate was 5.3 per cent for men and 4.4 per cent for women.

Of the total number of unemployed persons, 37,900 (14.3 per cent) were looking for a first job.

In the second quarter of 2016, the unemployment rate for the 15-29 age group was 10.9 per cent (12.7 per cent for men and 8.4 per cent for women). In comparison with the second quarter of 2015, this rate was 3.0 percentage points lower, the decline being higher for women (4.9 percentage points) than for men (1.5 percentage points). LI/LG
