GERB Returns Mandate to Form Cabinet

Sofia, December 2 (BTA) - President Rosen Plevneliev on Friday handed a government forming mandate to GERB, the largest party in the 43rd legislature. GERB leader and outgoing Prime Minister Boyko Borissov returned the mandate as he had stated previously.

After the cabinet's resignation and consultations with the parliamentary parties the president should mandate the two largest parliamentary parties and a third party of his choice.

Speaking to journalists after the meeting with the President, Borissov said that under those circumstance early elections were the most democratic thing to do and then the people would have its say.

Taking a question, Borissov said that he didn't know when the elections would be and that this was up to the next president.

Borissov called on President-elect Rumen Radev to nominate a caretaker government together with incumbent President Plevneliev.

"I call on Mr Radev to sit down with President Plevneliev and nominate a government that will make the transition and set the date for the early elections in order to calm down the state. We have a budget and all sectors have more funding so our absence won't be felt."

Asked about who should nominate the new Bulgarian EU Commissioner, Borissov said that "if Radev was to share the responsibility together with President Plevneliev who has six weeks to serve out his term, then the caretaker government will nominate the EU Commissioner." Borissov said that GERB did not make a nomination on purpose and that they wouldn't make any proposals.
