Foreign Minister Daniel Mitov Discusses Concern over Bulgaria's Geopolitical Orientation with
US Assistant Secretary Victoria Nuland

Sofia, December 9 (BTA) - Foreign Minister Daniel Mitov told journalists on Friday that he discussed the situation in Bulgaria with US Assistant Secretary for European and Eurasian Affairs Victoria Nuland on December 2. The meeting was about "concern that Bulgaria's geopolitical orientation may be called into question at some point, or at least the positions on key parameters of Bulgaria's foreign policy may change, especially those regarding the sanctions against Russia over the annexation of Crimea - positions which have so far been consistent, clear, very precise, and consonant with international law."

Mitov commented: "I am concerned that a future government of the Left may see things differently and change the course of Bulgaria's foreign policy, which is aligned to that of all our allies and partners, and is in Bulgaria's national interest. None of our allies would find such a change desirable."

Mitov also said: "It is in Bulgaria's interest to defend the principles of international law and to not allow revisionist regimes to redraw modern borders. If such a precedent is set, Bulgaria may find itself in a complicated, risky situation."

Asked if he is referring to Turkey, Mitov said: "I am not referring to anyone in particular, but all who are familiar with Balkan history know that peace has been achieved with great difficulty here, many conflicts have started from here, and a destabilization of the international legal order could always feed someone's ambition to redraw borders."

Asked to comment on a letter in which Movement for Rights and Freedoms Honorary Chairman Ahmed Dogan describes Russia as a guarantor of peace on a global scale, Mitov said he did not share this view.

Regarding the possible formation of a caretaker government, Mitov said he did not intend to be the member of a government which will work for 15 days.
