Sofia Hosts
 40th World Congress
 of Vine and Wine

Sofia, May 29 (BTA) - Sofia is hosting the 40th World Congress of Vine and Wine between May 29 and June 2. This is the first time it has been chosen as the venue for the event.

The congress, which is considered the most important event in the world of wine, brings together delegates from all 46 member states of the International Organization of Vine and Wine (OIV). Nearly 1,000 delegates from across the world are in Sofia, including senior government and business representatives, leading oenologists, vintners, wine tasters, vine-growers and wine-makers. They will be able to taste the products of key wine-making regions in Bulgaria.

Organizing such a congress greatly promotes Bulgarian wine and Bulgaria as the sixth biggest wine exporter, the organizers said. Hosting the congress will considerably boost export in 2018, and Bulgaria will be advertised as a wine destination.

Before the opening of the event, Agriculture, Food and Forestry Minister Rumen Porozhanov said Bulgaria now has a unique opportunity to showcase its wine and its views on wine-making, which will boost its wine industry. Organizing the forum is a clear sign which reaffirms this country's central role in wine-making.

Tourism Minister Nikolina Angelkova said that hosting such a major event is a great recognition for Bulgaria which is doing increasingly well on the world map of wine-making. This country has all it takes to turn into a most preferred destination for wine tourism with its more than 230 wineries. PK/DD
