Sofia, March 20 (BTA) - Economy Minister Emil Karanikolov told journalists Tuesday that some 150 dams in Bulgaria were in serious condition.

Last week the cabinet discussed plans to set up a state-run enterprise to which municipalities can transfer the responsibility for the repair and maintenance of dams they cannot manage.

Repairs will begin immediately after the ownership of dams that cannot be managed is transferred by the municipalities.

The funds needed for maintenance will be calculated when it becomes clear how many dams will be transferred to the state, Karanikolov said. Beli Iskur Dam near Sofia alone requires between 30 and 60 million leva.
