Sofia, June 20 (BTA) - A total of 8,640 books with a circulation of 4,974,355 were published in Bulgaria in 2017, which is an increase by 18 per cent and 26.1 per cent, respectively, compared to a year earlier, show data of the National Statistical Institute. Last year also saw the publication of 1,428 pamphlets with a circulation of 1,735,424.

Out of these publications, 7,948 books and 1,315 pamphlets (92 per cent) had an International Standard Book Number (ISBN), meaning they could be traded in the country and abroad.

According to their target group, the books and pamphlets published in 2017 were distributed by number and circulation as follows: 3,292 titles in fiction for adults with a circulation of 1,540,000; 1,912 titles in scientific literature with a circulation of 415,000; 1,613 titles in popular literature with a circulation of 928,000; 1,461 titles in educational literature with a circulation of 2,030,000; and 1,262 titles in children's and juvenile literature with a circulation of 1,564,000, of which 639 titles in children's fiction literature with a circulation of 636,000.

The books and pamphlets published in the original language of writing (including Bulgarian) totalled 7,410, or 73.6 per cent of all publications. Translated publications totalled 2,658 with a circulation of 2,428,000, of which 53 per cent were translated from English, 8 per cent from German, 7.3 per cent from Russian, and 6.9 per cent from French.
