site.btaForum Discusses Efforts against Funding of Terrorism

Sofia, June 22 (BTA) - National Assembly Chair Tsveta Karayancheva said that the work of the judiciary is equally important in reducing the terror threat in Europe as those who fund terror should be brought to justice.

She opened a forum on efforts against the funding of terrorism in Parliament on Thursday.

Karayancheva noted that at a EU level legislative measures have been adopted against money laundering and financing of terrorism. In the works are also changes that will facilitate the exchange of information between the financial intelligence services and law enforcement agencies.

Prosecutor General Sotir Tsatsarov said that Bulgaria has legislation against terrorism and its funding in line with modern standards. According to him, cooperation between the countries should be overhauled with regards to the exchange of information, cooperation between police and intelligence services, as well as working international legal instruments for investigation, collecting of information and seizure of assets.

GERB floor leader Tsvetan Tsvetanov noted the role of the UK and the implications of Brexit to EU security.

Nathalie Griesbeck, chair of the special committee on terrorism at the European Parliament, said that terrorism spreads very rapidly and counter efforts should be reinforced.

She added that a report is being drafted on the funding of terrorism which will be used as recommendations for legislative action and measures against terror threat.
