Interview with Yelena Glushakova, Deputy Director of the Main Information Directorate with MIA "Rossiya Segodnya" and head of the "Russia" Department with RIA "Novosti", Moscow
MIA "Rossia Segodnia" is a media group that includes the state news agency of the Russian Federation RIA "Novosti".
Ms Yelena Glushakova has 15 years of experience as a journalist, and is currently head of the "Russia" Department with RIA "Novosti" in charge of the news feed in Russian language. In an interview for the BTA, Ms Glushakova pinpoints the main challenges before her agency today.
Agency journalism is forced to compete in terms of reaction time and content with social networks, which currently present a real danger to the profession. Ms Glushakova believes that social networks have affected journalism so strongly that they have even changed it. The main challenges today are the struggle against fake news, its rebuttal, double-checking the information and disseminating only objective news. A top priority for the journalists at RIA "Novosti" is sifting through the vast sea of information, as well as selecting and quickly publishing only verified news. They strive to quote only high-ranking officials who bear responsibility for their statements. Ms Glushakova also talks about the way tragic or crime-related incidents are covered. She says that all journalists at RIA "Novosti" strictly adhere to the editorial policy and moral code when covering tragic events, especially when victims are involved. A leading principle of the agency is to publish only accurate and verified news, avoiding at all costs topics that are prohibited by the law or incite hatred and violence within the society that could develop into national conflicts. Russia is a multinational country, so national conflicts are covered with utmost care.
Ms Glushakova is optimistic about the future of journalism. She is convinced that professional journalism has a bright future, as it is a social necessity. "Currently, world journalism has to make an important decision: to set the future course of the information flow. The tendencies of ten years ago are now being revised," says Ms Glushakova. She disapproves of the ambition of some journalists to always produce sensational headings while distorting the truth.
