Pharmaceutical Companies Invested
LV 24 Mln in Training of Medical Professionals and Health Organizations
in 2017

Sofia, August 2 (BTA) - Pharmaceutical companies invested 24 million leva last year in training of medical personnel and in health organizations in Bulgaria. Of these, 16 million leva went to medical professionals and 8 million into professional organizations. This transpires from a report on the financing that the pharmaceutical industry provides to the medical community.

Such reports are made public on an annual basis in keeping with the Disclosure Code of the Association of Research-Based Pharmaceutical Manufacturers in Bulgaria (ARPharM) adopted in 2013.

ARPharM director Deyan Denev is quoted as saying that cooperation between medical professionals and the pharmaceutical industry is vital for the advancement of medicine. "Medicines are hi-tech products and their development and application need to be well explained and require exchange of experiences and knowledge between the industry and doctors. This is the only way to ensure correct and effective treatment of patients and to develop new therapies," Denev said.

He argued that thanks to this cooperation doctors have an opportunity to be involved in further training and to develop as professionals, which is in the vest interest of patients and the health care system.

As much as 66 per cent of medical professionals have agreed to have their financial relations with pharmaceutical companies disclosed. Their number is steadily rising, showing the support of the medical community for the transparency initiative.

In 2016, the ARPharM-associated companies invested in medical research 150 million leva, including 40 million leva provided by the local structures of the companies.

The investment is expected to reach 190 million leva in 2018.

Recent statistics shows that some 190 new clinical studies start in Bulgaria every year and 1,000 people enroll in clinical trial programmes each month. LN/
