Sofia, October 16 (BTA) - Energy Minister Temenouzhka Petkova Tuesday conferred with senior officials of the state-owned energy companies and trade union representatives, Petkova's Ministry said in a press release.
The main topic of the meeting was the future of the thermo-electric power plants and of the Maritsa East coal mines in connection with the rising prices of CO2 emissions quotas.
Petkova said that by March next year, the Maritsa East 2 thermo-electric power plant has to pay more than 300 million leva for emission quotas. She said that a working group in the Ministry has developed short- and long-term measures to stabilize the company. The money for the emission quotas will be provided, Petkova said.
Also, experts from the Ministry will present before concerned parties initial data about the strategy for sustainable energy development 2030-2050 which is being drawn now, and highlights of the EU energy legislation.
Petkova said that Bulgaria should opt for a phased transition to a low-carbon economy in order to ensure affordable energy prices. LY/ZH
