An interview with Michalis Psilos, Director General of the ANA-MPA

In an interview for BTA, ANA-MPA's Director General, Michalis Psilos, said that one of the gravest problems of Athens' news agency is the problem of plagiarism. A lot of media are stealing our content, our news, many times our photos and videos, and so our Agency has no money to survive, Mr. Psilos said. For example, if in Greece there are 50 000 websites, and ANA-MPA's clients are only 500, the remaining 45 500 websites are stealing the content of the Agency. So, the other media must realize what it means to steal the content of a news agency. If the other media don't want to pay and be subscribers, then the survival of the ANA-MPA will be under crucial threat. The problem of fake news is an important one and it should be viewed as a largely spread phenomenon, not just a small problem and professional journalism must answer to this crucial phenomenon by uniting its forces. This is why during the international conference in Tirana, under the motto NEWS AGENCIES vs. FAKE NEWS Mr. Psilos made a proposal for a red-line to be established between the agencies, for communication in cases of serious problems, concerning fake news, so agencies could confront this fake news in one way and in one voice.
You know, I'm afraid about the role of professional journalism, Mr. Psilos continued, because with all these social media, the Internet etc, every person on the Planet thinks that he is a journalist. So if there is such a conclusion that everyone is a journalist, the problem of information, of giving people good information, will be very, very serious in the coming years. /Zlatna Kоstova/
