Sofia, February 21 (BTA) - Foreign and domestic investments in Bulgaria in 2018 are expected to total 20 billion leva, Deputy Economy Minister Alexander Manolev said here Thursday. He was speaking at a forum titled "Agriculture and economy. Trends and challenges" organized by Entrepreneurs GERB in Starosel village (Central Bulgaria), Manolev's ministry said. Manolev noted that the data has not yet been published by the National Statistical Institute (NSI).
Agriculture and Forestry Minister Roumen Porozhanov also participated in the forum.
Manolev noted that there is a steady growth of investments in Bulgaria. He explained the differences between the "foreign direct investments" index that the Bulgarian National Bank (BNB) measures, and the "gross fixed capital formation" data that the NSI summarizes. "If we want to gain a better understanding of our growth, we should examine the NSI data as it summarizes both foreign and domestic investments in real economy," he said.
He noted that the BNB data also shows a growth of investments but that it is less frequently updated, about every 15 months. Thus, Manolev illustrated the difference between preliminary and summarized BNB data for 2017, an increase of nearly 1 billion leva for the entire year. The same trend was observed in 2018. "Eurostat data shows that by investments share of GDP, Bulgaria ranks higher than Italy, Greece, Luxembourg and the United Kingdom, and as high as Slovakia," Manolev explained.
His forecast for 2019 is a new growth of investments, as Bulgaria continues to attract foreign business investors. According to a German-Bulgarian Chamber of Industry and Commerce survey, nearly 90 per cent of German companies would invest again in Bulgaria, given the opportunity. Swedish business has a similar attitude, with nearly 94 per cent of companies operating in Bulgaria planning on expanding or maintaining their activity here. LI/TH
