Mikhail Gusman - "Journalism today and tomorrow"

An interview with Mikhail Gusman, Vice President of the News Agencies World Council and Deputy Director General of Russian news agency TASS

This September, TASS will mark its 115th anniversary. Today, TASS employs about 2000 collaborators, it operates in over 70 countries, and Mikhail Gusman believes that the authority and influence of TASS in the media world are only going up. He thinks that the most serious challenges, not only for TASS, but for the entire world of news, is the ever growing influence of various modern technologies. "There's a difference between social networks and professional news providing. Another threat to us is fake news, they are probably the gravest threat in the information world not only to us, but to the whole of humanity," says Mr. Gusman. Yet another problem is the inadequate protection of journalistic copyright. How does political correctness affect news coverage? According to Mikhail Gusman, "political correctness" is a rather generalizing term. "We are the state news agency, and we operate within the state framework, we abide by state policies, and we know it's the right thing to do. We navigate the deep waters of the state domestic and foreign politics, while having absolute freedom in our information services."

Mikhail Gusman is optimistic about the future of information agencies, as the world will always need news. "Our task is to make the news honest, correct, truthful and fast."

Mr. Gusman has great expectations for the Sixth News Agencies World Congress, to be hosted by BTA on June 13-15, 2019 in Sofia. "It was TASS and Yours Truly who initiated the News Agencies World Congress. We organized the first edition of the Congress in Moscow, back in 2004. This year's sixth edition is organized by the BTA and its Director General Maxim Minchev, who is a good friend of mine and a highly respected member of the media community. BTA was unanimously supported as a host by all members of the News Agencies World Council (NACO). The Congress agenda is very rich, featuring various interesting key speakers and discussions. I would like to wish the best of luck to Mr. Minchev and his team in organizing the Congress which we would be delighted to attend!" said Mr. Gusman. /Boriana Dimitrova/ 07.03.2019
