April 5 (BTA) - The BSP for Bulgaria parliamentary group has submitted a petition for the removal from office of Counter-Corruption and Unlawfully Acquired Assets Forfeiture Commission Chair Plamen Georgiev and his deputy over a scandal with their property, the Bulgarian Socialist Party's press office said Friday.
BSP leader Kornelia Ninova described Georgiev's decision to takea leave from work as hiding from responsibility. On Thursday, Georgiev said he is taking a leave shortly after it transpired that Bulgaria's Supreme Cassation Prosecution Office will probe his real estate acquisitions.
Approached by journalists, GERB election campaign headquarters head Tsvetan Tsvetanov commented that it is still unknown what the Socialists have submitted in Parliament and what reasons they have given. In his words, the BSP should not be giving moral assessments when it has put MPs charged with money
laundering on leading positions in the party's MEP candidate list.
Danail Kirilov, who was elected Justice Minister by Parliament on Friday, too commented on the Socialists' petition. Asked how the GERB parliamentary group will react, he said their decision will be completely in conformity with their counter-corruption policy and the law. He specified, however, that the specific facts about the petition are still unknown.
Commenting on the scandal with Georgiev's property, Kirilov toldjournalists that the law should be applied equally to everyone, regardless of whether they are representatives of the legislative, executive or judicial power. According to Kirilov, Georgiev's decision to take a leave complies with the law and allows the prosecuting magistracy to conduct its probe.
