New Residential Buildings
Up by 20.5% in
Q1 of 2019


Sofia, May 3 (BTA) - In the first quarter of 2019, the number of residential buildings that began being built was 871, which is an increase by 20.5 per cent year on year, show data of the National Statistical Institute released on Friday. The number of dwellings in them stood at 4.481 and the gross building area was 625, 846 sq m, which is an increase by 7.8 per cent and 31.4 per cent, respectively.

The number of administrative buildings that began being built in the first quarter of 2019 stood at 17 with a gross building area of 30,743 sq m, which is a decrease by 5.6 per cent in the number of buildings but an increase by 35.9 per cent in the gross building area.

The number of other buildings that began being built was 644 with a gross building area of 573,305 sq m, which is an increase by 37.9 per cent and 33.7 per cent, respectively.

The highest number of new buildings that began being built in the first quarter of 2019 was registered in the regions of: Plovdiv (153 residential and 101 other buildings), Bourgas (107 residential and 50 other buildings), Varna (119 residential and 22 other buildings), Sofia - capital (110 residential, 3 administrative and 23 other buildings), and Stara Zagora (70 residential, 3 administrative, and 53 other buildings).

In January-March 2019, local administrations issued permits for the construction of 1,247 residential buildings with 7,832 dwellings in them and a gross building area of 1,032,933 sq m, which is a drop by 15.6 per cent, 33 per cent and 29.1 per cent, respectively, compared to the previous quarter. Permits were issued for the construction of 28 administrative buildings with a gross building area of 67,404 sq m, which is a decrease by 15.2 per cent and 70 per cent, respectively. Local administrations issued permits for the construction of 1,149 other buildings with a gross building area of 560,208 sq m, which is a drop by 12.9 per cent and 28.3 per cent, respectively.

Compared to January-March 2018, the first quarter of 2019 saw a rise in the number of permits for new residential buildings by 7.3 per cent, in the number of dwellings in them by 25.4 per cent, and in their gross building area by 26.6 per cent. The number of permits for new administrative buildings increased by 7.7 per cent and their gross building area, by 103.6 per cent. The number of permits for the construction of other buildings grew by 12 per cent and their gross building area, by 12.2 per cent.

The highest number of permits for the construction of new residential buildings were issued in the regions of: Plovdiv (220), Sofia - capital (213), Varna (107), Sofia (107), and Bourgas (96). The highest number of dwellings to be built was registered in Sofia - capital (2,906), Plovdiv (1,389), Bourgas (620), Kurdzhali (600), and Varna (582).
