President Radev Congratulates President Putin
with 140th Anniversary of
Bulgarian-Russian Diplomatic Relations

Sofia, July 8 (BTA) - President Rumen Radev has sent a letter to his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, with congratulations on the 140th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Bulgaria and Russia, the Presidency said on Monday. Bulgaria and Russia established diplomatic relations on July 7, 1879.

Radev underscores that Bulgarians have not forgotten Russia's decisive role in their liberation as a result of the Russo-Turkish War of 1877-1878, and revere the memory of the Russians who died in it. He also notes that the relations between the two peoples step on deep historical, cultural and spiritual relations rooted even further back in history.

The letter also notes that in the 140 years of modern history, bilateral relations have not always developed unequivocally but have always been in the centre of public and political attention even in the most complicated periods. What is more, they have always come with an emotional charge typical of countries with long years of historical tradition in their contacts.

"This is reason to consider that there is sufficient solid ground to develop a mutually beneficial dialogue on an equal basis," the letter says. Radev expresses certainty that with joint efforts and a well-intended approach, the perspectives set in the bilateral dialogue can be implemented, and so can the cooperation in finding solutions to current challenges on the regional and international plain. /LI/BR
