Socialists Urge Government
to Waive Fee on ID Card Replacement
after Data Breach

July 26 (BTA) - The opposition Bulgarian Socialist Party
demanded that the government waived fees for the replacement of
ID cards of those who wish to do so in the wake of a massive
personal data breach on July 15. The BSP for Bulgaria will
submit a draft resolution in Parliament to this end, BSP for
Bulgaria floor leader Kornelia Ninova told journalists in
Parliament on Friday.

Ninova said that the draft resolution will oblige the government
to raise funds and set the procedure for the replacement of ID
cards within three months.

According to Ninova, there is a risk to the property and assets
of the people whose personal information was leaked from the
National Revenue Agency database.

Ninova criticized the government for acting inadequately in the
situation.

"We think that the security of people and of their assets should
be guaranteed. The state should take responsibility because the
government failed to protect their personal data," said Ninova.

Ninova said that as early as Monday the BSP will begin a series
of meetings with representatives of the Notary Chamber and
Supreme Judicial Council members to seek their professional
opinion about finding a solution in connection with the data
breach at National Revenue Agency.

GERB sees behind BSP's demand for a fee-free replacement of ID cards "political hacking" and "populism", MP Krassimir Tsipov of GERB told journalists in Parliament.

"We have just witnessed a political hacking by BSP and its leader Kornelia Ninova with the only aim of panic-mongering," said Tsipov.

He was adamant that Bulgarian citizens need not replace their identity documents and said that the authorities are working on the case and that the perpetrators will be established.

In a statement to the media the National Revenue Agency confirmed that if a check against NRA software application indicates that someone's personal data have been exposed it is unnecessary to take extra steps. There is no immediate risk of properties and assets passing to another person, according to the Notary Chamber, banks, fast loan and leasing companies and the Registry Agency

The leaked data is fragmented and doesn't offer a full inventory of a person's properties and assets. IG/PP
