Done on the Cusp

Sofia, December 31 (BTA) - Two successful kidney transplants and one liver transplant were performed at the Lozenetz University Hospital and the Military Medical Academy ahead of New Year's Eve. The transplants became possible following a donor situation in the northern town of Pleven on December 29 when a 63-year-old man was pronounced brain dead after a traumatic brain injury, the hospitals said on Tuesday.

The kidney transplant recipients were men aged 41 and 61. The liver transplant was performed on a 59-year-old man with terminal liver disease.

The Health Ministry offered condolences to the donor's family and thanked them for their humane decision which gave several Bulgarians a new lease on life. NV/DD
